The Horror Stories of Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson

Although best known for his historical novels, satire, and apocalyptic science fiction, Robert Hugh Benson was also an accomplished horror writer — although, perhaps, in a far more subtle manner than that to which a jaded and jaundiced modern age has become accustomed. Benson's horror stories tend to be more chilling than bloodcurdling or shocking. Because of that, however, Benson's forays into the genre have achieved something of a cult status among discriminating enthusiasts of supernatural fiction as well as a measure of popularity among thoughtful readers of fiction in general.

These editions of Benson's horror stories feature new forwards and annotations for today's reader. They are available from both Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Wholesale quantities of 10 or more of each title are available for 20% off the cover price, plus shipping. Send an e-mail to publications@cesj.org to enquire about shipping on bulk orders.

A MIRROR OF SHALOTT

A Mirror of Shalott is a finely crafted collection of interrelated short stories virtually guaranteed to keep you awake at night. The record of a fictional "informal symposium" in Rome, the setting and theme strongly suggests that Benson's book may have influenced Taylor Caldwell's Grandmother and the Priests. Who or what the book inspired, however, it is both entertaining and thoughtful. Daytime reading is highly recommended.

THE LIGHT INVISIBLE

The Light Invisible was Benson's first published work, a series of interrelated short stories with a supernatural theme. Written as "mystical" stories, a significant proportion can be considered as "crossing the line" over into horror. Benson felt that this book reflected a certain inner struggle in his life during a very difficult time. Despite the author's uneasiness about the book, however, the collection has been a favorite of many readers for over a century.

THE NECROMANCERS

Some few of Benson's novels have remained in print sporadically. This is one of them — and, apparently, for all the wrong reasons. Ostensibly a warning against the dangers of "Spiritism," The Necromancers is actually an insightful psychological study of the effects of grief — and the problems that result from not dealing with it in a human manner. This novel should be considered a "horror classic," but not in the usual vein.
